Free Day in Christchurch

Family and Friends,

Weather: sunny and warm, high around 72 degrees.

Today seemed to be a logistical challenge for our group. Six guys from our UNL group originally planned to rent a car and tour around the Christchurch area. That plan fell through when we realized we couldn't rent a car for anymore than five people. Not wanting to leave anyone in the group out, we resorted to plan "B".

We caught the 9:17 a.m. bus from Lincoln University to Christchurch. We spent the rest of the morning at the Adventure Center and Christchurch Visitor's Center learning about what our options were for the day. The decision was made to kayak up the Avon River, which runs through the center of the city. After a quick lunch consisting of Chinese food we headed toward the river.

The kayak rental was very affordable; only 10 dollars for one hour. The Avon River was very shallow and provided a very beautiful, scenic, and relaxing afternoon. I noticed many local people lining the river enjoying the weather and opportunity for recreation. We spent 40 minutes paddling up the river as far as possible and 20 minutes floating back to the rental site. I can swim well, but fortunately the river was only about 3 to 4 feet deep. I can't believe how clear the water was in the river. It seems as if all of the water here in New Zealand is crystal clear.

After kayaking on the river a few of us spent time looking around the local shops in downtown Christchurch. We headed to the mall after being downtown to pick up a couple of supplies and then headed back to Lincoln. To change up the supper menu I purchased a genuine New Zealand TV dinner at the New World supermarket near the university. It was actually very good!

Tomorrow at 11 a.m. the UNL group is heading by bus to tour a dairy farm. I am looking forward to the opportunity to view the country's agricultural production. Stay tuned to learn more about what I see. After our dairy farm tour we will head to the river for an overnight stay and whitewater rafting.

Enjoying the sun,

Matt
