Gondola and Mountain Biking

Friends and Family,

Weather: sunny and warm all day, temperatures around 75 degrees.

Today we had a free day to explore New Zealand on our own. A group of guys and I decided to ride a gondola to the top of a mountain overlooking Christchurch and mountain bike back down to the bottom. The day turned out to be one of my best experiences yet here in New Zealand.

We boarded the public bus at the bus exchange in downtown Christchurch and traveled to the gondola site. The view of the city on the way up the mountain was amazing. The view from the top of the mountain included Lyttelton harbor and a portion of the coastline. This experience was definitely worth the money! After securing our mountain bikes and helmets we started down the mountain. The terrain was rocky and the path was crooked and difficult riding. The mountain bike path provided excellent views of the coastline scenery. I will have to show all of you pictures when I return home. We returned our bikes a few hours later to the gondola site and caught a bus back to Lincoln University for a supper and a relaxing evening.

It seems like most of the city has been shut down for Christmas and the New Year holiday. We have another free day tomorrow and a few of us plan to rent a car to tour the countryside. I hope we can learn to drive on the "wrong" side of the road.

Take care,

Matt
